GOOD Scales

In my opinion, there are GOOD scales and there are BAD scales.  The above scale would definitely fall into my 'bad' category.  A 'bad' scale CAN be a 'good' scale if it's used to weigh something other than me . . . like a puppy
 or a hamster
but my FAVORITE scale is of the 'vintage' variety used solely for decorating purposes.  A few weeks ago I scored this one at a garage sale for $5.00!
Right now I have it on the floor next to a large pot filled with dried reeds.  I love old books so I just grabbed a few I had and put them on top of the scale.
Like ladders, I think scales can be decorated in so many different, fun ways.  For example, Songbirdblog stacked some vintage doilies on hers . . .
The Blessed Nest has a slew of ideas for vintage scales including this one where she uses it for soaps and towels . . . used their scale as a centerpiece to hold a flower arrangement . . .
Americanhoneyhome created an entire vignette around her $10.00 vintage scale find!
Gracefully Vintage has a whole slew of ideas for a vintage-style wedding including using scales to hold favors
AND this cute idea using incorporating a vintage jell-o mold with flowers
I played around a little bit with my scale displaying different things like one of my vintage teapots
and this lovely two-handled teacup that my dear friend gave me a few weeks ago
The corsage was mine from my son's wedding last summer.
Do you have any vintage scales?  How do you use yours?

  1. Oh my how I love vintage scales!

  2. Thank you so much for the wonderful feature! Your scale is in such amazing shape and you can not beat that price! I love the ways you have dressed it up as well as all the other scales others have done. Have a great week!

  3. I love vintage scales too and have four sets. Three of them are exactly the same with a beautiful green bakelite tray and one is the old type with a brass deep tray and black hexagonal weights. One set of the above mentioned with green tray belonged to my maternal grandmother but is in very poor condition and I have it displayed in my outdoor area with other rustic things like old tins, lanterns, wooden laundry trolleys and stools etc. I love to preserve these lovely old treasures and just hope that my children want to do the same when I 'pop my clogs'. Thanks for sharing your delightful photos.

  4. Okay, I love old scales too, but always wondered what to do with one, and now I know. So the next step is to find one...

  5. Lauren, thank for stopping my Bees Knees Bungalow. My 'faux barn door' is actually a gate that is one 100 years old. cool huh!? Hey, your scales.. on my Pinterest page, on the 'junkalicious board' there is a scale w/ baby posed for a photo. it is darling.
    Love your header!

  6. Love old scales...I even have a vintage one("the bad kind")hanging on the wall in the bathroom...I added magnets and flash cards that say "wash" and "hands" a memo board instead of to weigh myself...that makes it "good" right? ;)

  7. What wonderful ideas for old scales! Thanks so much for sharing these alternate ideas. Seems like almost any scale can go from "bad" to "good" with the proper dressing up!

  8. Hi Lauren,

    I love this post.
Your scale is beautiful! I love how you decorated it.

  9. Now, I am convinced that I need a vintage scale. Lovely blog by the way!
Thanks so much for sharing at Cowgirl Up! Hope you will join us again next week!

  10. Oh, what wonderful scales -- I love the one with the shells and soaps! And yours, with the pink teacup! I have an old scale that was my father-in-law's -- it's so huge and heavy, I don't quite know what to do with it!

  11. I love your new scales Lauren! I love all the creative ways you showed how you can decorate with them! My friend has a set of vintage scales in her kitchen and I love them! Angie xo

  12. I LOVE old scales! All the ideas you put together are just fabulous.
Hummm ... I think I'll go and play with mine some more! Thanks for the inspiration and linking. The new party is open so you might want to link there, too.

  13. Oh I missed this post! I love old scales, wow that was a score $5.00 those kind of deals keep us going!

  14. I hate it when you go use someone scale and there like add four pounds it's broken. It's like why brother then? It's probably not going to be right.

  15. Ohhhhh I love old scales and I am have added that to my 'vintage wish list' for my kitchen / dining room too. What a score for $5.00! So jealous. Oh, and I think the two-handled tea cup is actually a 'cream soup' cup... I think! I have seen some recently at some estate sales and they are always listed as 'cream soup' cups. I might have to find a scale for the kitchen and another for my dining room hutch, I love them that much!
