I'm trying NOT to stop at garage and estate sales since I've been downsizing/cleaning out the house in recent months BUT I stopped at an estate sale today after church and since it was the last day, everything was half price. This wooden box caught my eye but it wasn't priced and I didn't know what it was.
I bought it and the rest of my stash for a total of 10.00. I think the box was 3.00 by itself. I loved the design! When I got home, I did some research and found that it is indeed a glove box from the early 1900's.
After more research I found that these were often sold as 'kits' and ladies would purchase the wood burning tool and create/decorate these boxes to be used for gloves, hankies and ties. Some kits allowed you to color parts of the wood as well. The outside of this is pretty but when you open the lid and see the intricate details (not exposed to the 'elements') it really is quite stunning.
I normally don't mess with vintage items but I think I may take a little wood polish and go over this to cover the scratches.
Along with the box I found some pretty linens, some to use in my kitchen and some to keep in my "gifts stash" or I'll be able to also use some at my teas.
I'm always amazed at how ladies MADE their dish towels and decorated them so beautifully! I don't think I can bring myself to USE these . . . they will just hang in my kitchen!
I'm always on the hunt for vintage holiday linens and LOVED this heart tea towel.
Not a single crooked stitch . . . amazing! I noticed something though as I turned the towel over to see how neat the stitching was on the back . . .
Crazy!! The stitching only goes through one layer! I tell you there is not a GLIMPSE of that thread anywhere on the back of this towel. Mine would have looked like it was splattered with red thread on the back! Something else I love is vintage earrings. These were all in a bag for 3.00. I do actually wear the earrings but I also love decorating with them, slipping them into and on pieces in vignettes.
And finally (probably one of my most favorite finds!)
The lady threw this in for free. I decorated my husband's office in a vintage travel theme so this is going to go in there somewhere. I guess back in the day, you didn't have RESERVED seats on a flight.
And airports were called 'intermediate stations'?? And call me a cynic but, what's to stop someone from just moving your card?? I guess people were more polite back then!
Did any of you hit a jackpot this weekend?
On
any given week (depending on how busy I am!) I love to participate in Link Parties. These gals put a lot of time and effort into
hosting these parties so I always want to show my appreciation by directing my
readers to these blogs.

I've never heard of or seen a glove box. How interesting! We have estate sales around here all the time but I never go as I don't need to get another thing at this point of my life. But, I still go to Tuesday Morning and TJ Maxx and I need to stop doing that. Happy new week!
ReplyDeleteOh, how pretty! I know what you mean about avoiding yard sales! I used to go to them so much, but since we have been minimizing over the past couple of years, I have to avoid them, too! But, I'm glad you were able to break the rules and find these goodies!! God bless you, sweet friend. :)
ReplyDeleteOh Lauren, that glove box is such a vintage treasure, isn't it? You sure hit the jack box with that and those lovely linens. I don't think I could use them either! Enjoy all your pretty finds!
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic finds! It's amazing to think about the intricate handwork that women used to do on things like dishtowels. And the woodturning on the glove box! My goodness, so many lost arts.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! Thanks for stopping by Carol!
DeleteEstate sales can be nice if they are not overpriced. It looks like you found a good one! The glove box is gorgeous! I don't use nice linens either, just display them...
ReplyDeleteWhat great scores! I'm also trying to downsize my tea collection so I need to stay away from garage sales too!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness--I love everything you found! If the price is right, I rarely pass on vintage linens or jewelry and that box is gorgeous! I hope you'll share your wonderful treasures @Vintage Charm on Thursday! Blessings, Cecilia
ReplyDeleteHi, sweet friend! What a joy to visit your blog this morning and see your many beautiful vintage delights. WHat a sweet glove box!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog and leaving such a sweet comment. The black and pink item you mentioned is a mug rug set. It comes with a mug rug, tea cup coasters, and a tea bag wallet.
Love and hugs to you!
The vintage glove box is so cool, the carving is gorgeous. It reminds me of a box that my mom had, and it was given to me when she passed away. Those earrings are so pretty. : ) You found some great stuff.

Hi Lauren, just wanted to let you know you are being featured at tomorrow's Vintage Charm party!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous box & a great find! I'm envious! It looks like what's called a Flemish art box, which was wood burned & could be colored, as you mentioned. Your other finds are awesome too...can't believe they were all still there on the last day!
