Make Your Own Elegant Cake and Cookie Stands

I've made many of my cake/cookie stands to use at my tea parties and you can too!  All you need is something for the base like a dessert glass (sundae glass shown here to the left), a glass candle or votive holder -- something sturdy to use as the base.  You need to decide which end will be the part that will rest on the table and make sure it is steady.  Some 'bases' you'll use right side up and some upside down, depending on the look you want.  You'll also need a plate or bowl which will hold your desserts and you'll need some type of epoxy glue (I prefer E6000 because it bonds almost instantly and dries clear but I've heard Gorilla Glue also works).  FYI, thrift stores are the best place to get these things.  Don't go to the store and buy them -- you'll find such beautiful pieces at thrift stores for pennies.  Thrift stores are full of beautiful individual plates and glassware 'discarded' because they are no longer complete sets!

First you want to thoroughly clean the surfaces that will be bonded together with soap and water and dry them completely.  In a well-ventilated area (if using epoxy) follow instructions and apply glue to both surfaces and press together, holding for a few minutes.  Then, leave them to dry.  Some epoxy glues will say they are dishwasher safe but I prefer to hand wash these pieces.  Oh, wait.  I don't HAVE a dishwasher so I have no choice!  But I digress.

I've even made small stands which I gave to each of the ladies at one of my tea parties as a favor.   I put a small pillar candle on each stand and wrapped the entire piece in tulle and tied with a ribbon.  Here are a few that I have and use to serve small items like sugar cubes or tiny cookies.

One thing I plan to try next is STACKING these with varying size plates to create a 'tower'.  Now it's your turn.  Trust me -- it's addicting because there are SO many cute little plates, candle holders and glassware out there that the possibilities are endless!
