Need More Love in Your Garden?

 

Did you know that not only are these creatures beautiful but they are very helpful for polination in your vegetable garden?  After several summers when I couldn't grow a zucchini to save my life, I learned that there was not enough polination going on. All I had were "female" flowers and no "male" flowers -- both needed to grow baby zucchini (and other vegetables).  Hence, my latest project inspired by the BrightNest blog.

 This cute, little feeder is simple to make and looks pretty too.

 These were part of my recent thrift store haul and were intended to be candle holders to hang on the wall but  I thought they'd be perfect to hold my butterfly feeder jars.  After bending the coiled part to hold my jar, I was ready to add a few of my own details.

 I had some metal flowers from another project so with E6000 glue, I attached them to the top of the jar and sprayed the jar lid green.

 Simply punch a hole in the lid using a nail and hammer (not too big because you want your piece of sponge to fit snugly).  Mix up 9 parts water to 1 part sugar and put in the jar.  Invert and hang then wait for the butterflies to come.

AND since we're STILL getting snow flurries and temperatures in the 20's and 30's, I won't be hanging this outside any time soon.  BUT, when the warm weather comes, I'll be making several of these to hang in the yard and hopefully this year, there will be more romance in my garden and more "babies" being born!
