Tiny Table Facelift & First Chalk Paint Project
I found this little table at my local thrift store marked $15.00 but it was of course "Half Off Furniture Day". As you can see from the pictures, it was in pretty sad shape but I liked the details on the top, legs and the lines of it.
After a fair amount of sanding, I stained and then applied two coats of polyurethane. I didn't try to remove the dark stain from the grooves or edges of it because A. That would have taken FOREVER and B. I liked the look of them dark.
I decided to use this piece for my first attempt at chalk paint. Now here's the great part (for me) . . . a stockist (the people who sell chalk paint) lives five blocks from me. I called her and she grabbed what I needed at the store, brought it home with her and I picked it up!
I applied two coats of Cream Chalk Paint. I distressed the piece slightly and then applied a coat of Annie Sloan Clear Wax. Now, I have been told you can either distress first and then wax or vice versa. Next time I'll wax first, distress and then wax again and see if it makes a difference.
For now it's in my living room. If I decide to keep it I'm going to add a small lamp to the top and move the books underneath. Either way, I think it was $7.50 well spent!
This table turned out beautiful, I have a very old table in need of a makeover, do you find the chalk paint at your local Lowe's, Home Depot?

Hi! Thanks for your kind comment! No you cannot buy the chalk paint from anyone except a "stockist". The paint was created by Annie Sloan and if you go to her site below, you can see where it is sold. Unfortunately for most people, they have to order it online and pay shipping. Read about the paint on their site -- it is AMAZING! No sanding, priming needed when you use it. It is expensive (34.95/quart) but they say it goes a long way and I tend to think they are right. I put 2 coats on this piece and you can't even tell I used ANY from the can!

It look gorgeous! five blocks away--that's nice!
ReplyDeleteLove it!!!!
Great job on your table. I just finished a night table in chalk paint...need to take pictures. I like that you kept the top the natural wood. It's great that you have someone close that stocks this stuff. While it's great, it is expensive to ship!
ReplyDeleteMarianne :)
I love the chalk paint on it. Your table looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOH,What a splendid job♪♪♪
ReplyDeleteMy husband asked me to enlared every picture and admired your excellent workmanship.
I think the table is happy to have the wonderful owner. Haha, Not for the Japanese style house. I liked the way you decolated candles.
Hugs, from Japan Orchid.
Lauren that turned out gorgeous,You made it look like a million bucks!
ReplyDeleteNice job and eye on the table! Love the creamy paint color with the stain.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog.
I'm linking up after you at Somewhat Simple and I really like how your table turned out! Looks like new!!!
ReplyDeleteHeck yeah!!! That is a beauty for 7.50!! I couldn't have passed it up!!
ReplyDeleteI want to know what the heck this new "chalk paint" craze is!!!! The name implies that it is chalk board paint, like you can write on it with chalk but I know this is different. If you could help me understand, I sure would appreciate it!!!
I bought an antique childrens desk and chair this weekend. Both pieces for 25 dollars. More than I would usually spend for sure, but I love it!! The chair has a metal bottom, it is all rusty now, and holes for where it was screwed into the floor, and the desk has metal legs too, but both have wood on top. The desk has an inkwell!!!
Maybe I should try this chalk paint thing!!!

Daniella,
ReplyDeleteYou HAVE to try it! You're correct -- it is not chalkBOARD paint. It is a paint that allows you to paint anything without sanding or priming -- even things with varnish or high gloss finish! I'm no expert but I've done a lot of reading and watching videos. The website is www.anniesloan.com and you can find great tutorials at Miss Mustard Seed's blog. She is a master at using it! Also Shauna West has some youtube videos from her blog that were very informative (and she's adorable to watch!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4JcE2Lgajc
Wonderful job! I like how you kept the top wood, I think it adds a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
I'm following you now.
:)
Wow, I can't believe this is the same table! Thanks for stopping by today to comment on my tables, they open up for extra storage, nothing fancy inside. I might line them with some vintage paper when I have a chance. Have a great weekend!

ReplyDeleteSuch a well done project! The table is beautiful. I like that you kept the top unpainted. I think it gives it so much character.
ReplyDeleteI noticed in your about me profile that you have twin daughters. We do too! I posted recently about their 9th wedding anniversary if you want to take a peek: http://gratefulprayerthankfulheart.blogspot.com/2011/06/our-son-in-laws-anniversary-post.html
So nice stopping by to visit with you!

Simply loved the transformation the table went through... especially the color you chose. I loved how you kept the grooves black on the tabletop... adds more depth to the tabletop. Also the vignette you created on the tabletop with the birdhouse below is looking gorgeous! Loved going through your post. Thanks for stopping by and I enjoyed reading your sweet comment. Happy Sunday!~Poppy
